Britain’s black majority churches have responded with compassion to the Haitian people following the devastation and suffering caused by the earthquake that struck the island on January 12, 2010.

The New Testament Church of God has put an appeal out to all their churches to collect donations, which will then be sent to their international headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. The money will then be sent to the head of COG Caribbean region so that it can used to help suffering Haitians.

COG has several churches in Haiti, many of which were destroyed on the earthquake. Their Overseer in the region Dr Elysee Joseph lost his life during the earthquake when the car he was driving was hit by a wall.

The New Testament Assembly in Tooting launched an appeal for funds the Sunday after the earthquake and are collecting clothes, food and medical supplies. Money collected will be donated to Christian Aid, the collectables will be shipped over to Haiti.

Spearheaded by former Disney artists Tom Bancroft, director Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”) and Chad Frye, auction funds will help support the family and finances of fellow cartoonist Tim Hodge. Hodge’s son Matthew remains in a coma five months after his car collided with a train.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, the NCSF  launched the eBay fundraiser to benefit the Hodge family.  165 treasures from 115 artists like…

• An original Charles Schulz “Charlie Brown” drawing
• An illustration by famous movie poster artist Drew Struzan
• Character drawings by Disney supervising animators of characters from the new “The Princess and the Frog” feature film
• Illustrations of “Po” from “Kung Fu Panda” character designer Nico Marlet.
• A drawing by the 2010 Golden Globe winning director of Pixar’s “Up” Pete Docter signed by actor Ed Asner.

Connected Church

Women in Christian leadership are being invited by Tearfund to take part in a trip to Malawi next year (February 2010), to spend time with women affected by poverty and HIV.

The trip will include visits to local churches which are reaching out to people in their communities who are affected by HIV, as well as opportunities to stay with a family in a community overnight and shadow them during the day.

‘We know that poverty always disproportionately affects women, and that they are very involved in caring for others and in finding practical solutions to issues in their communities,’ says Yioula Taliadorou, Church Relationship Manager at Tearfund.

‘I know that the women who come on this trip will return challenged, humbled and inspired to share their passion for justice and tackling poverty with their families and churches.’

During the trip, there will be opportunities for the team to work alongside local families and churches and to pray with and for them, as part of Tearfund’s Connected Church programme which helps UK churches to partner with churches in the poorest parts of the world.

Artist Yvonne LyonScottish singer and songwriter Yvonne Lyon, who went to Cambodia with Tearfund on a similar trip earlier this year, said: ‘I fell in love with the way church does things. There was an emphasis on the spiritual and education combined. ‘For example, we met a teenage HIV support group and I saw groups of women and children in the village learning about health. I wasn’t expecting to see something so practical which was obviously restoring respect and dignity. I felt really proud and I believe in what Tearfund does.’

The trip runs from 22 February to 5 March and costs £850 plus flight costs.

Jonathan Acuff
A 33-year-old preacher’s kid from Atlanta recently raised $30,000 in 18 hours to build a kindergarten in Vietnam...

Jonathan Acuff, 33, is the writer of the satirical Stuff Christians Like blog, which was started as a reaction to the popular blog Stuff White People Like. The Christian blog is less than two years old but the site has drawn hundreds of thousands of online readers and Acuff already has a book deal with Christian publishing giant Zondervan.

Some of his posts include “#654. Staring at someone in the choir during the sermon”; “#327. Conferences, AKA the Christian Prom”; “#39. Giving advice on things we’ve never experienced”; and “#240. Kirk Cameron.”

After more than 600 posts, Acuff took the bold step of pursuing what his 6-year-old daughter inspired. With more than 75,000 readers a month, the blogger plopped on them a fundraising project.

Jonathan Acuff book 1“Right now, right here, you and me and the Stuff Christians Like community have the chance to be much bigger than a blog,” Acuff wrote in his blog last week. “I am growing overwhelmed but the sense that God has given us all a tremendous gift called, ‘being alive on Monday’ and He’s holding His breath in eager anticipation to see what we’ll do next.

“And what’s next for Stuff Christians Like is that we’re going to build a kindergarten in Vietnam. (No segue whatsoever; we just jumped into that, didn’t we?)”

He was challenged by the oldest, Laura Elizabeth, of his two daughters who one year ago was shocked to discover there were kids her age starving in other parts of the world.

While looking through a book together, they came across a picture of a little boy who was starving and whose ribs were sticking out.

Christmas Hamper projectCongregation members from various churches across the London Borough of Barnet are getting ready to spread some cheer this Christmas and have started work on putting together thousands of Christmas hampers which will be delivered to families in need living in the borough.

A church spokesperson at Jesus House, one of the churches involved explained, “Last year we decided to touch the lives of local residents over the Christmas season and distributed over 1500 food hampers in the West Hendon and Colindale areas.  People greatly appreciated this small gesture, so we felt it would be a good thing to repeat the exercise this year, and distribute hampers to people in need right across the borough.

Urbana09

What is Urbana?

Urbana is the missions conference for North American students hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA and Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada. Urbana 09 will be our 22nd conference. The first “Urbana” was held in Toronto in 1946. From 1948 to 2003, the conference was held at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Since 2006, Urbana has been held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. Generations of college students have come to Urbana to hear about cutting edge issues in missions and to respond to the call to participate in God’s global mission. During the five days of Urbana participants will experience multicultural worship and drama, dynamic speakers, in-depth Bible study and prayer. They will also be encouraged to explore short-term and vocational opportunities as they interact with representatives from more than 300 mission agencies and educational institutions. Attendance at Urbana is usually around 20,000. Urbana 09 will be held December 27-31, 2009.
