Britain’s Christian community are being asked to support and buy charity single Somebody Please, recorded to raise money for the victims of the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12.
Lawrence Johnson, music director at New Wine church in Woolwich, south east London, and Les Moir of Kingsway Music were moved to organise the recording after hearing that left over 200,000 people dead and millions homeless.
Lawrence explained, “We decided to record ‘Somebody Please’ because we felt the lyrics were very appropriate for the people we hope to raise funds for. It tells the story of a child crying out for help and justice. We’re very excited about this project. We’re hoping that the Christian community will really get behind this release, help push it on Facebook and their networks and make it a success.”
Artists that took part in the recording included Graham Kendricks, Guvna B, Victizzle, Muyiwa, Lurine Cato, The Witness, Tim Hughes, the Beechcroft Chapel Choir, IDMC, Faye Simpson, Rachel Kerr and E Tizz. All artists represented a broad range of genres including gospel rap, r’n'b and choir sounds.
Noel Robinson, co-writer of ‘Somebody Please’, stated, “The Bible says that the world will know us because of the love we have for one another. And that’s not just love for people that know us or who share our faith, but lost voices, those who are voiceless. I hope that this song captured the voice of the people of Haiti.”
All the money raised from the single will be donated to Compassion, a Christian charity that partners with churches throughout the world to work with vulnerable children. The money will be used to finance the rebuilding of the Wesleyan Hospital on one of Haiti’s islands, La Gonave, that provides medical care for 100,000 people.
Somebody Please will be available for download on April 25 for just 79p.
